“But I've gone back to that way with guitar. For a while I had this idea that I needed to be growing as a musician, so I needed to know exactly what I was doing I've rediscovered a bit of mystery with the guitar. It was nice to switch to an instrument where I didn't know what I was doing. With guitar, I'm like, 'Okay, that's D major, that's an E major 7th.' I know exactly what they are. That's why it was nice when I started writing songs on the synthesizer, because I didn't really didn't know how to play one. “At the same time, I seem to be the most creative when I don't know exactly what I'm doing. Guitar is the instrument I’m probably the most proficient on, so it's probably the easiest. My palette of instruments has expanded over the years, so now I use different things to write songs. “Well, it used to be the only way I knew how to write songs because guitar used to be the only composing instrument I knew how to play, and the only instrument I owned. Have you found over the years that you use the guitar more or less as you’re composing? Is it still integral to your songwriting process? I don't know how to describe it, but it's just this really good feeling with the song, kind of like falling in love with it. It's almost like getting to know someone, like having this moment of sheer.
“I'll start a song and keep working on it until I have a moment with it. The only thing that I have is that it's essential for me to have a 'moment' with the song, whether it's late at night, when I'm just starting to write the song or halfway through it.
“Honestly, I don't really have songwriting habits or any kind of method.
